Why Healthcare AI Fails Without a Trust Strategy
A new headline in healthcare tech today was about the three Epic AI Personas: Art, Penny, and Emmie. Epic’s move to personify AI across the clinical, patient, and billing journeys marks a shift from tools you use to agents you collaborate with.
But as these agents begin "talking" to one another—passing data from a patient’s MyChart query to a clinician’s summary—we are entering a dangerous gray area. If your AI strategy is struggling, it’s likely because you’ve focused on what the AI can do, rather than how it communicates.
The Death of the Interface
For decades, UX was about buttons, forms, and screens. In the AI-native era, the "surface area" has shifted to the handoff. When an AI agent summarizes a patient's history for a doctor, the interface isn't just the text on the screen; it's the invisible logic used to prioritize that information.
When this logic is opaque, trust evaporates.
Why Strategy Must Precede Implementation
AI fails in healthcare not because the LLM is "wrong," but because the strategy for human verification is missing. To build a resilient AI workflow, leadership must solve for:
The Transparency Deficit: We need a "paper trail" for AI-to-AI interactions. If "Emmie" flags a symptom to "Art," the clinician must be able to see the raw data, not just the AI’s interpretation of it.
Surface-Level Confidence: Every AI output should carry a "confidence score" that is intuitive, not intrusive. We must design ways to flag uncertainty without triggering the "alert fatigue" that plagued the EHRs of the last decade.
Designing for the "Hallucination": We must stop treating AI errors as bugs and start treating them as features of the system. A winning strategy assumes the AI will be wrong and builds the shortest possible path for a human to correct it.
The New Competitive Advantage
The next generation of healthcare leaders won't be those with the most powerful algorithms. They will be the ones who master the human-in-the-loop workflow.
The goal shouldn't be "autonomous healthcare." It should be "augmented accountability." If your AI strategy doesn't explicitly define how a human stays in control, it isn't a strategy—it's a liability.
